Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this gold calculator?

The calculator uses the live COMEX spot price updated every 5 minutes. The result is the melt value — what the gold content is worth at spot. Dealers will pay 5–15% below melt value when buying from you, and sell at 3–8% above spot.

What is the difference between karat and carat?

In the context of gold, "karat" (K) measures purity — 24K is pure gold. "Carat" (ct) is a unit of weight used for gemstones (1 carat = 0.2 grams). They are completely different measurements. The UK sometimes uses "carat" for gold purity as well.

How do I find out my gold's karat?

Look for a hallmark stamped on the piece — common marks include "999", "916", "750", "585", or "375". Jewelry bought in the Middle East or South Asia is usually 22K (916). European jewelry is typically 18K (750). If unsure, a jeweler can test it with acid or XRF equipment.

What is the gold price today (2026)?

The current gold spot price is $4,549.5 per troy ounce, or $146.27 per gram for 24K pure gold.

Does the gold calculator include dealer premiums?

No — this calculator shows the melt value (spot price × weight × purity). When buying physical gold, dealers add a premium of 3–8% on coins and 1–3% on bars. When selling, you'll typically receive 85–95% of spot. Use the melt value as a baseline for negotiations.
